What happens when you microwave aluminum foil?
Aluminum foil and other metal objects reflect microwave energy instead of allowing it to pass through food. This can cause electricity to build up and create sparks, especially if the foil is crumpled, has sharp edges, or touches the sides of the microwave.
What can happen:
- Sparking (arcing): Electricity can jump from the foil, creating sparks or small flames.
- Fire risk: Those sparks can ignite nearby flammable materials, such as paper products, grease, or food reside.
- Microwave damage: Arcing can damage the inside of your microwave, including its interior coating and electrical components.
For safe reheating, always follow your microwave manufacturer's instructions and never use a damaged microwave.
What to do if foil sparks in the microwave
If your experience sparks from accidental use of aluminum foil in your microwave, follow these steps:
- Stop the microwave immediately. Either stop the microwave cycle or unplug the microwave entirely.
- Carefully remove the foil from the microwave. If cool to the touch with no clear signs of sparking or flames, carefully remove your foil sheet of foil-wrapped food from the microwave.
- Inspect your microwave. Check the inside of the microwave for damage before using it again and follow your microwave manufacturer's safety instructions.
- Do no use foil in the microwave. Use alternative parchment or wax paper, microwave-safe glass, ceramic, or silicone products in the microwave instead.
- Practice fire safety. Always keep a fire blanket or fire extinguisher nearby in case of a fire emergency.
